Battles

How do battles work?

Combat in Degens in Space is turn-based, where each player chooses their actions simultaneously in each round. Players use weapons, defenses, and items to try to reduce their opponent’s Health Points (HP) to zero. Each action costs stamina and can result in different effects depending on the item or maneuver used.

What skills do in battle?
  • Computation Skill: Enhances the power of weapons and defenses.

  • Magic Skill: Improves the effects of amulets and the Charm basic action.

  • Intelligence: Affects the effectiveness of all skills, with 10 Intelligence being neutral. Lowering your opponent’s intelligence will reduce the effectiveness of their skills.

  • Stamina: Increases your starting Stamina stat, that lets you undertake more actions before needing to Recover.

What happens if I run out of stamina during a battle?

Every action costs stamina. If you run out, you’ll need to take a "Recover" action to regain 1 point of stamina and continue.

What is the cooldown period?

When an item is used, it enters a cooldown period measured in turns, during which it cannot be used again during a battle. The cooldown length depends on the item's type and power — higher-powered items generally have longer cooldowns.

How does food work in Degens in Space?

Food items have two main types:

  • Edible Food: Recovers your stats (e.g., Juice restores HP, Orange restores Stamina, Honey restores Intelligence).

  • Rotten Food: Reduces your opponent’s stats (e.g., Bacteria reduces HP, Bubbles reduces Stamina, Algae reduces Intelligence). Human-crafted food has a +1 Power bonus and a -1 Cooldown reduction.

How do drugs work?

Drugs are split into two categories:

  • Stimulants: Temporarily boost the pilot's stats for some turns, after which the stats return to normal (the added stats are reduced).

  • Sedatives: Temporarily debuff an opponent’s stats for some turns. After that, the debuffed stats return to normal after a set number of turns. Stats will never drop below 1 due to drugs.

The number of turns a Drug effect stays active is related to the Item's Power.

What are some strategies for success?

Success in battle depends on predicting your opponent's moves, using items at the right time, and defending or attacking strategically. Timing is crucial, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of weapons and defenses can make a significant difference.

Items

How do items work?
  • Food: Recovers or reduces stats depending on the type of food (edible or rotten).

  • Drugs: Temporarily boost or debuff stats for a set number of turns.

  • Weapons: Used to attack opponents.

  • Defense: Protects against weapon attacks.

  • Amulets: Provide temporary boosts or debuffs during specific battle conditions.

How do I get items?

Items are distributed as rewards after battles. They can also be acquired in the Space Bazaar using $MATTER or from other players in third-party marketplaces such as Magic Eden, Mscribe etc.

What are the different types of items in the game?

There are five types of items:

  • Weapons: Used to attack opponents.

  • Defenses: Reduce damage from weapons.

  • Food: Restores your stats up to their maximum or harm your opponent's.

  • Drugs: Provides temporary stat boosts, or debuffs to the opponent.

  • Amulets: Modify specific actions done by the player or the opponent.

How many items can I use during a battle?

You must choose the items you want to use before entering a battle. While there’s no limit to how many items you can hold in your inventory, you are limited to using only six items during a single battle.

What is the "Power" of an item?

Power represents the effectiveness level of an item. Higher power items have stronger effects but also come with longer cooldown periods.

What are Item's species Skill bonus and how do they work?

Items crafted by a particular species grant cumulative skill increases when used. These bonuses last until the end of the battle and are linked to the species' favored Skill.

How does an item's race affect its performance?

Items can be associated with a specific race, which impacts their effectiveness in combat. This applies to all players, regardless of their pilot's race. These race-specific items provide two key bonuses:

  1. Skill Bonus: Every time an item belonging to a race is used, it grants a +1 skill bonus to the race's favored skill for the remainder of the battle.

  2. Favored Bonus: If an item is manufactured by its favored race, it benefits from Increased Power and reduced Cooldown.

Here’s how different races favor specific item types:

  • Human: Food items

  • Ebens: Drugs

  • Draconian: Defenses

  • Replicant: Weapons

  • Venusian: Amulets

Will new Items be released regularly?

Yes, the world of Degens in Space expands autonomously with every new block mined on the Bitcoin blockchain. This allows for continuous growth and the introduction of new characters, items, and locations (with future updates).

It's estimated that a new item appears in the galaxy every 93 new Bitcoin blocks. This number can vary based on how the blockchain evolves.

Pilots

What is the significance of Pilot's species?

Pilots of different species start the game with specific skill bonuses. When minted, Pilots may also have other bonuses attached to them, increasing Skills even further.

Skills

How do skills affect stats?

Skills in Degens in Space influence both the starting and maximum values of certain stats during combat:

  • Stamina and Intelligence skills have stats directly attached to them. Increasing these skills doesn’t raise the stat immediately, but it raises the maximum limit of that stat, allowing it to go higher during battle.

For example, if you increase your Stamina skill, your stamina stat can reach a higher maximum in combat, even though the current value may not change instantly.

  • Computation and Magic skills do not have stats directly tied to them. These skills influence the effectiveness of actions (like attacks, shields, or amulets) but don't have a stat associated with them.

In short, raising your Stamina or Intelligence skills increases how much stamina or intelligence you can potentially have in combat, without immediately affecting your current stat value.

How does stamina work, and how can I boost it?

Stamina is required to perform actions. The more stamina you have, the more actions you can take during combat before having to Recover. Certain traits and items provide stamina bonuses:

  • Human pilots: +5 Stamina

  • Male pilots: +3 Stamina

  • Items: Bandana (+3), Goggles (+4), Pollution Filter (+5)

  • Traits: Increased Muscles (+3), Immune to Diseases (+4), Cyborg (+5)

How does the Magic Skill work in the game?

Magic is crucial for using Amulets and Charm abilities. Charm reduces an opponent’s Intelligence, weakening their skill-based actions. Magic bonuses can come from specific pilot traits and items.

How does the Computation Skill work?

Computation affects how powerful a pilot's basic attacks and shields are. It also enhances the effects of Weapon and Defenses Items used during battle. Computation bonuses come from pilot traits and specific items.

How does Intelligence affect battles?

Intelligence influences the effectiveness of every action taken in battle. A high Intelligence increases the power of skill-based actions, while low Intelligence weakens them. Intelligence can be debuffed with certain items or abilities, and bonuses come from specific traits and gear.
